It has long been a truism in American politics that nothing boils the blood of a Republican like Hillary Rodham Clinton.
From the moment Mrs. Clinton stepped onto the national stage as the woman who would be first lady if then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton were elected president, Mrs. Clinton became an almost mythical figure in the cosmology of right-wing activists, who attribute a whole series of alleged crimes to him, none of which is credible.
In the annals of GOP conspiracy theorists, Mrs. Clinton allegedly staged the suicide of her husband’s assistant White House attorney, staged a street robbery to cover up the murder of a Democratic National Committee staffer, and even allegedly orchestrated the strangulation of Jeffrey Epstein, who at the time was locked in a high-security holding cell under the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The former US secretary of state’s pet peeve status among Republican stalwarts is one of the many reasons why so many conservative activists who would normally have shunned a thrice-married ex-Democrat like Donald Trump have flocked to his banner. and remained with him throughout his first campaign. Defeating her was all that mattered to them.
But with Mrs. Clinton more than five years away from her last campaign, it seems Republicans simply cannot live without using her or other women in politics as foils to stir up outrage.
Although the former New York senator left electoral politics years ago, the talking heads of the GOP are working hard to find ways to resurrect old right-wing storylines about Mrs. Clinton and are even integrating her into theories of the conspiracy they launched around the current president, Joe Biden.
Mr Biden is in his first term, and despite being the oldest person ever elected to the presidency, he has said he will run for a second term in the 2024 general election.
But his popularity has declined since taking office, leaving his approval ratings just above those of Mr Trump at this point in his presidency. And rather than accept at face value the idea that Mr. Biden thinks he can garner enough support to win re-election (possibly in a rematch with Mr. Trump), Republicans are salivating at the far-fetched idea that Mrs. Clinton will return to the fight.
According to New York Postpolitical strategist-turned-conservative media personality Dick Morris is confident there will be a 2024 primary without Mr. Biden as a nominee, and according to him, the two top contenders who will fight for the nomination are Mrs. Clinton and the New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Speaking on a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday, conservative commentator and former Trump administration treasury spokeswoman Monica Crowley called her a “corrupt sociopath, criminal of Deep and morally bankrupt state that has inflicted more damage on this nation than any other modern American. politician,” although she provided no evidence to support these claims.
“That being said, none of this will stop him from running for president,” she continued, ignoring the fact that Mrs. Clinton has expressed no desire to return to politics.
Ms Crowley added that she believed the former secretary of state – not the incumbent president – would be the Democratic nominee in 2024, and that Mrs Clinton would eliminate “big foot” Vice President Kamala Harris.
On the same panel, Jack Posobiec, former game of thrones the blogger-turned-right-wing media figure who the Southern Poverty Law Center lists as having white nationalist ties, went even further by calling Ms Harris an ambitious traitor who was likely plotting to force Mr Biden to quit before the end of his prime mandate.
“When you’re someone who looks up to the presidency, right, and you want to choose your vice president, the last person you should choose is probably someone who’s obviously going to stab you in the back like Cersei Lannister at a wine party, ASAP – that’s exactly who Kamala Harris is,” he said.
Mr Posobiec added that the VP was ‘an empty pantsuit’ whose only shot at the presidency is to ‘kick’ Mr Biden from the White House – and, without any evidence, claimed plans were being developed for exactly this action plan.
“They are going to try to kick Joe Biden out of this White House. Because they don’t want him going up against Putin and Xi and everything, and they’re going to put her in there,” he said.
But when asked about the possibility that other female Democrats such as Mrs. Clinton or another former first lady, Michelle Obama (who has never expressed a desire to run for office), could also run, he suggested an outcome. apparently disastrous.
“If you stand in Hillary Clinton’s path to the White House in a primary, it could be one of the most dangerous places you’ve ever encountered in your life. She doesn’t care if you’re Michelle Obama or Kamala Harris, this woman is coming and she is coming for you”.
