Political blogger shot dead; Police still investigating motive – Mindanao Times

DAVAO CITY – A political vlogger in Manay, Davao Oriental was shot dead on April 1 one kilometer from the city center, the XI Regional Police Bureau reported.

According to initial data, Danilo Lumikid Jr., also known as Donnie Lumikid, was riding his motorcycle from downtown on his way to another barangay when someone shot him in the head.

The report added that no witnesses came out as the shooting happened in an isolated area even when it was along the highway.

Senior Police Officer Joselito Gomera, an investigator, said investigators had yet to find a witness because “the place is very isolated and there wasn’t a single house you could find.”

Gomera added that locals speculated that the killers might be on a motorcycle just like the victim.

The regional police office did not include the city in the list of election hotspots.

Asked if they’ve established a motive, Gomera said investigators are still looking at all angles ‘so we can avoid putting immediate color on the murder’ as the victim had a channel on the popular site Youtube where he talked about politics.

The municipality is the official residence of one of the most prominent families in the province, the Dayanghirang family. The head of the family is outgoing Governor Nelson Dayanghirang who is running as the representative of the province’s first district in the House of Representatives.

The report adds that five minutes after the shooting, Police Major Meliton Sango I, acting police chief, asked units from the neighboring towns of Tarragona and Caraga to carry out a check within their boundaries while a team City police were searching for the killer.

Manay is the town between Caraga to the east and Tarragona, the town adjacent to the provincial capital, Mati City.

About 20 minutes after the incident, Dr. Abellardo Bantayan, the city’s health officer, pronounced the victim dead.
