Villanova holds off Delaware to win Liberty Bell Classic ~ Philadelphia Baseball Review

Joey Castellanos finished with three hits to lead Villanova to a 6-5 win over Delaware on Tuesday in the Liberty Bell Classic title game at Citizens Bank Park.

The victory marks the first time the Wildcats have won the local tournament since 2011.

Villanova led a five-run lead in the sixth before the Blue Hens came back with a four-run frame highlighted by a two-run single from John Weglarz.

The Wildcats jumped on the scoreboard early, Castellanos pushing Chris Rotondo through home plate in the first inning with an RBI single. Shane Solari launched a run in the second with a sacrificial bunt, with another run heading home via an error.

Chic DeGaetano pitched four innings for the Wildcats, allowing one run on four hits. He had five strikeouts and walked just one.

Cole Vanderslice played in relief, pitching two scoreless innings while sniffing out three.

Trailing by one run, the Blue Hens threatened in the ninth with a first single and walk putting the potential go-ahead on the base. Things got interesting with a wild pitch, a stolen base and a passed ball in the inning, but Danny Wilkinson extinguished the threat to collect his first stoppage of the season.

Villanova (14-18-1) returns to action this weekend with a series of talks at UConn.
